SPOILERS AHEAD: A new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved 1983 story, replacing many of 1990’s practical makeup effects with 2020 CGI.
Anne Hathaway’s performance as the Grand High Witch matches the movie’s comedy/terror tone quite well, and her fluid Swedish/Hungarian/Russian accent is a nice touch. She is opposed by the kindly (Octavia Spencer) and three children (Jahzir Bruno, Kristin Chenoweth, and Codie-Lei Eastick) turned into mice. Stanley Tucci is fun in a supporting role as the manager of a lavish hotel where most of the plot unfolds.
Hathaway’s “witch face” may scare some younger children (parents, you might want to preview this online), but this should be a good family watch for the Halloween season. I would recommend checking it out.
