Vincent Price chews up the scenery as anti-witchcraft magistrate Lord Edward Whitman, who winds up in conflict with a local pagan leader Oona (Elizabeth Bergner) and her followers. Oona conjures the spirit of a banshee to enact revenge on the Whitman family for their abusive conduct.
The Elizabethan costuming is spot on, the movie is well shot, well lit, and well written. There’s quite a bit of lurid violence towards women (it had to be absolutely awful to have been a woman back then — not that it is a picnic now). This movie actually needed a little more gore in the banshee scenes, we just get some after-the-fact scratch marks.
