Based on H.P. Lovecraft’s The Colour Out Of Space short story, this sci-fi/horror offering relies on family tension and mystery more than special effects, although the latter when used are gripping and sometimes disturbing. The draw for most viewers is Nicolas Cage, the slightly-quirky dad who descends with his family into mania after a meteorite lands in the yard of their secluded country home. Hints of classic sci-fi and horror films pop up here and there, including Poltergeist and John Carpenter’s The Thing. This is definitely worth a view, and a must for any fan of Nicolas Cage.
