SPOILERS AHEAD: Mutant teenagers are housed at a rural clinic under the pretense of helping them work through their psychological issues, with the help of Dr. Reyes (Alice Braga), in order to prepare them to join Charles Xavier’s school for gifted mutants. But new addition Dani Moonstar (Blu Hunt) is the catalyst for discovering there is something different going on than the doctor has been telling them.

The subtext of this movie is about how childhood insecurities and fears can grow into debilitating adult trauma if not dealt with properly, and that is effectively presented.

The cinematography and score definitely give it a horror feel, up until the end. The climax is more of a traditional superhero action sequence, competently filmed and acted.

This movie was tortured by release delay after delay, culminating in the Disney acquisition of Fox and the subsequent theater closings due to COVID-19. The result is…adequate. I hope it at least comes close to making its budget back. They did try with this movie.

I give it 2 out of 4 paws: lion paw lion paw
