This is a movie about a competition among cats to see who will be reborn into a better life. Interwoven are some skits about how cats generally try to get away with as much as they can to indulge their individual whims. The story builds to the singing of Memory by socially-ostracized and discarded Grizabella (Jennifer Hudson) and it is a fine performance by a great vocal talent.

About the weirdness of this movie…it is on the level of The Apple but one-ups it by shrinking the principals down to about knee-height–then transforming them from costumed dancers to cat people via computer graphics. The dancing is great, although the cinematography doesn’t do it justice in my opinion. The whole thing is just too weird for my tastes (and I like weird stuff) and I don’t know who the target audience for this was supposed to be. Most of the cast are really giving it their all and that lifts it just enough into two-paw territory.

I give it 2 out of 4 paws: lion paw  lion paw
